What Makes Us Human

Are the monkeys in the video "dumb"? I might say they are if my fellow citizens did something so silly.

So what is it that makes us better than monkeys? As the video might demonstrate to you, not much. So why do I continue writing this; what is it that I'm trying to get through to you?

We have the unique ability to reprogram ourselves. No matter how many times these monkeys, or other monkeys, or probably even humans, try this experiment, they will always fail at getting the banana. It just goes to show that the monkeys are their own biggest enemy.

We have the power to reject the wisdom of the other monkeys. You know, this kind of gets into the reason I don't necessarily like old people. The monkeys that are in the cage before the new monkey are so convinced that they've seen it all before, that they know exactly what WILL happen because they have seen what HAS happened.

Humans have millions of years of programming hard-wired into our brains to behave like these monkeys do. Yet we have a choice. There is a layer of consciousness that has emerged in humans; between your subconscious thoughts and conscious actions. This very thin layer communicates to our conscious minds the intent of our subconscious minds. However small, there is a tiny message that your conscious receives before you carry out the actions of your subconscious desires. If you listen close enough, you can hear it every time.

How does this make us "better" than monkeys? We can choose to reject our programming. We can choose to ignore the actions that our primal programming strongly suggests we perform. Furthermore, we have the capacity to program ourselves the way we want. Self-programming is a long, difficult and arduous task that few are willing to undertake.

Yet, we must undertake this task if we are to distinguish ourselves from mere monkeys.
